What Universities Look For in College Application Essays

College application essays are the most dreaded pieces of writing that an adolescent will ever encounter. To score high in this area you have to put towards your mini-autobiography in a very convincing manner, such that it doesn't sound braggy on one hand and on the other don’t be so ungenerous so that you never reveal what is genuinely good about you. This is a fine line you have to tread. No applicant can claim to have experience in this. But you can avail the services of writers for a fee and buy admission paper or college application essays. If that is not a route you prefer, here are a few pointers of what are the universities looking for in application essays.

  • Maintain conciseness

Universities receive thousands of applications for a few hundred seats. If you just going writing more than a thousand words in an essay, chances are that you will surely bore the readers, in this case, the people who are in a position to grant you admission. Even though the minimum requirement is about 250 words, if you write a saga, chances are you will never make it.

  • Honesty wins trust

This is what universities like most -- an honest applicant. You don’t have to reveal everything about you, but tidbits information that separates you from the rest -- for eg -- wrote a short book that was not well received or failed to get selected for the national basketball team etc.

  • Show that you are a person at the end of the day

People have shortcomings. You don\t have to brag only about your titles and achievements, areas where you need improvement also rings in well with colleges. You can write about how you were able to get back to high school after a year of dropout on account of depression and now how you can use the same to inspire others. Success stories and turnarounds are some of the most appreciated essays in college applications.

  • Use humor sparingly

Application essay assessors go through scores of applications, and nothing makes more effective an impression as a little bit of humor. We don’t know how the person on the other side would respond to this. So be judicious in its usage.

  • Make your description stimulating

You can share anecdotes from your life in a vivid manner with the people involved and situation. This kind of  ‘storytelling’ paints an image of an applicant who is in touch with the real world and is more than just concerned about the superfluous individual concerned about materialistic and academic achievements.

  • Accuracy and consistency matters

Not just grammatical accuracies but also ideas mentioned have to be consistent with each other. If you are writing about your love for Shakespearean literature, make sure you give correct information about him or else that part of the essay will sound hollow.
