Studying mathematics requires a different approach than studying history or social science. It's important to be aware of these keys to learning mathematics:

- You have to understand the principles. Just knowing formulas and equations is not enough. You need to master the fundamentals and know when and how to use the formulas. Developing proofs of the formulas helps you to get a better understanding of what the formulas mean.

- Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You have to be very actively involved, study, work lots of problems, and try different solution approaches to develop insight, become proficient and adopt a rational, structured way of thinking. All of this takes time, hard work, and persistence. Slacking off during the semester and and then cramming the night before the final exam is not the way to learning math.

- Math is cumulative. You can’t do algebra if you’re weak in fractions and basic math. You won’t’ do well in calculus if you haven’t mastered algebra and trigonometry. You can’t do differential equations if you don’t understand calculus. Make sure that you have a firm grasp and understanding of the basics and prerequisites before moving on to the next level.

- Do the homework. You got homework for a reason: to practice and learn.

- Use your textbook. Sometimes teachers work from handouts and only use the textbook to assign problems. Use the textbook as a self-study guide. The book may explain a particular concept and theory in a way that's easier to understand than the teacher's. The textbook probably also has many worked-out examples that can help you learn and improve your understanding. Take advantage of this resource that's right there on your desk.
