Tell me and tell me again

Tell me and tell me again. But show me and it will stick forever!

This is my response in regards to the question about describing the best learning style that is most suitable - kinesthetic, visual, or auditory.

My answer - it depends on the subject area.

I have been exposed to working with individuals in a smaller group (up to 25 students) with a central focus. My subject matter proficiency is in quantitative subjects such as Physics and Mathematics. When I tutor an individual in Physics, I usually focus on the visual aspect of learning. I encourage the individual to draw out or create road maps, or pictorially describe the objective of the problem first. Then, we address the problem together on the board or on paper. Then we attempt to solve multiple examples of the same problem but with different variables involved. With Mathematics or Physics, the board is a good tool to use. The diagrams have to be laid out, the problems have to be identified, and the objective of the question has to be known. I really favor the visual learning method especially when “complex numbers” are the objective or the problem.

With regards to working with four or five individuals in a small group, I usually use the kinesthetic learning method. I encourage each individual to assume different roles (variables) as it relates to the problem at hand. This is very applicable subject matter areas such as Biology and Physiology. However, I am a more "number" based tutor, so I incorporate less body movement or interaction when complex numbers are involved.

That is my response, what is yours? Please feel free to comment.

. tutoring is a non-remedial approach to reinforcing learning.
