As an art lover, drawing is my favorite. That is to say, the use of the drawing technique is my favorite. But, many are puzzled as to what makes a good drawing composition. Do you want to know my first criteria for a good composition? Contrast.

These days the art of drawing surpasses the use of graphite and charcoal alone. Of course, there is colored pencil. The use of pastel is considered painting. And, now there is oil sticks that although have been around for a while, are getting renewed attention as the newest art medium in drawing. So, what do we call it, painting or drawing? Does it matter? In my opinion, not as it relates to good composition.

Contrast, contrast, contrast, is key to composition. Balance no longer has a legitimate say when it comes to composition since most of the rules of composition are being broken anyway. However, you can not get away with breaking the contrast rule especially when it comes to pencil drawing on paper. If you can't see it from across the room, you've lost the game. Make sure your drawing technique includes contrast. Make sure your composition can be seen from across the room. Then make sure your composition is interesting enough to entice the viewer to walk across the room to take a closer look. If that happens, you know you've got it.
