21) Message boards : News : New record penultimate prime factor (Message 2287)

NFS@Home has found a new record penultimate prime factor! 7,889M, which is a portion of the number 7^889+1, splits into 151-digit and 160-digit prime factors. This 151-digit prime factor beats the old record, a 147-digit prime factor of 12^293+1. Congrats to all contributors who helped set this new Cunningham project record!

Somewhere around 80%, yes. I do it manually so it's not exact.

7,889L is done, but 7,889M is only about 50% sieved. It will take a couple more weeks at least. The earlier ones were faster thanks to a BOINC challenge bringing in additional contributors.

Exponents divisible by 5 are possible but yield a degree-4 algebraic polynomial which is far from optimal at this size. They are more difficult than their SNFS-size suggests. See this paper for details. To a lesser extent the same applies for exponents divisible by 11, which results in a degree-5 algebraic polynomial.
26) Message boards : Questions/Problems/Bugs : Why the next number (7,889M) is not sieving? (Message 2276)
Posted 17 Feb 2022 by Greg
Post:
At that time there was a backlog of numbers waiting for the linear algebra to be run. That backlog has now been cleared. The reserved numbers will appear on the page as they are entered into the BOINC queue.

We only need one number sieving in each queue to supply the clients. Currently both f_small and f queues have only one number sieving. Once 7,889L is close to done, I'll start 7,889M.

I've seen that happen occasionally. Don't know why, but if it's working you can ignore it.
31) Message boards : News : Change NFS@Home to use SSL (Message 2256)

Post:
I have modified NFS@Home to use SSL. As a result, the project URL has changed from http://escatter11.fullerton.edu/nfs to https://escatter11.fullerton.edu/nfs. If you see problems as a result of this change, you may need to remove then reattach the project. Old http links will continue to work.

That's odd. I'm using macOS Big Sur 11.6, and the project works fine using both BOINC 7.14.2 and 7.16.19.

The 14e queue isn't used as often anymore, so work will be sporadic. You can view the current status at https://escatter11.fullerton.edu/nfs/crunching.php.

Ah, they're running a job with an octic polynomial. The Linux binaries aren't compiled to support that. It's mostly done, so they should pass soon. Sorry about that.

Ok Kiska, no more sticks!

It's always fun to wake up and discover Apache PHP crashed shortly after I went to bed. We're back and I'll keep an eye on it.
