I just updated the application for 32-bit Windows. I changed the memory allocation routine to use the Windows function VirtualAlloc() rather than malloc(), which seems to help a little on 32-bit Windows XP. Also, booting Windows XP with the /3GB switch if you can also seems to help a little. I'm interested to know if this new version helps with Windows XP 64. This version also prints out the size of the large allocation.

We do seem to be running into the limits of the Windows XP memory manager. Windows 7 doesn't seem to have these problems with 1GB allocations.

Running a taks now on my 4-thread, 8gb machine.

The good news is that it is now already over 4 minutes. All the error tasks before died well before 2.5 minutes. It ran up to 1084k of memory, and stuck there.

Fingers crossed!

The good news: Almost all are completing successfully!

The bad news: There were two failures. Different error message this time, but both the same:

Excellent! I'll look into the "special q does not divide" error. That usually indicates restart from a bad checkpoint, but there was no restart right before it happened. For now, though, at least it's rare.

hey Greg... i didn't realize how much ram these wu's eat up, so for now i've suspended or i should put the project on no new task until i get this job and can get some more ram in for my quad core system... i let my system run nfs overnight and i find it nearly locked up this morning when i turned the screen on. 4 gb of ram isn't enough.

Nope, 4GB isn't enough with four cores for these workunits. Other options are limiting BOINC to running on three cores, or running another low-memory project alongside NFS. This works if you limit BOINC to using only 75-80% of your available memory even when the computer is not in use.

Yea, i know, but i'm a person, whose mission with the computer is, a sort of "all in" i got memory set to 90%. i use all 4 cores, and my gpu. i'll just get this new job and buy some more memory. i need some more anyway.

Dear Greg,

with WinXP-32bit now the new v1.09 run without errors on my system.
The operating system is without the /3GB switch and without PAE, so it's possible to execute 1 or 2 NFS wu and other projects in parallel.

Max WU size is about 1'090'000 KB (sample of 10 wu completed).

Best regards
