I was born in Hungary, before the fall of the Iron Curtain. While I was still young, my family fled - amid machine gun fire - from the totalitarian atheism of communist Soviet socialism (USSR). We lived for several months in a refugee camp near Vienna Austria. As my Dad had a masters in Mechanical Engineering, he got a job offer (a sponsor) relatively quickly.
I worked for NASA at Cape Canaveral, before going back to graduate school.
I have a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am also a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.).
I spent 4 weeks interpreting for the centennial Olympic Games; I still speak (and read and write) Magyar.
Veronica (my wife, an ESOL teacher) and I have visited and toured both the Arecibo radio receiver in Puerto Rico as well as LIGO in Livingston Louisiana.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good...
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light," and [BANG!] there was light.
God saw how good the light was.
Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin, so that the dry land may appear. " God saw how good it was.

I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army.

The people who walked in darkness

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted her relative Elizabeth, of the house of Aaron.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. "
And Mary said:
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For He has looked upon His handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him.
The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.
Then Zechariah, filled with the holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.
He has raised up a horn for our salvation
within the house of David his servant
Joseph went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.
The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
"Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."
So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.
When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord," .
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.
He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
"Now, Master, you may let your servant go
in peace, according to your word,
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and glory for your people Israel."
And Jesus came down with them. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured.
And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said:
"Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you,
and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward
will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the
prophets in the same way.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you,
for their ancestors treated the false
prophets in this way.
"But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.
Jesus Questioned by Pilate.
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus said, "You say so." And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer.
Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?"
But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called (Jesus) Barabbas. So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Which one do you want me to release to you, (Jesus) Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah?" For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over.
While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him." The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. The governor said to them in reply, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They answered, "Barabbas!" Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!" But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!"
When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves." And the whole people said in reply, "His blood be upon us and upon our children." Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull), they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall. But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink. After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, if you are the Son of God, (and) come down from the cross!"
From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "This one is calling for Elijah." Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge; he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink. But the rest said, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him." But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.
And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!" There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him. Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it (in) clean linen and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed. But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb.
The next day, the one following the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, "Sir, we remember that this impostor while still alive said, 'After three days I will be raised up.' Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' This last imposture would be worse than the first." Pilate said to them, "The guard is yours; go secure it as best you can." So they went and secured the tomb by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard.
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men.
Then the angel said to the women in reply, "Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, 'He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.' Behold, I have told you."
Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."
While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. They assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.' And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy (him) and keep you out of trouble." The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present (day).
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

...the LORD saw how great was man's wickedness on earth, his heart was grieved. But Noah found favor with the LORD.
When God saw how corrupt the earth had become, since all mortals led depraved lives, he said to Noah: "I have decided to put an end to all mortals on earth; the earth is full of lawlessness because of them.
"Make yourself an ark, put compartments in it and cover it with pitch: the length shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty and its height thirty cubits. I am about to bring the flood waters, to destroy everywhere all creatures. But with you I will establish my covenant; you and your sons, your wife and your sons' wives. Of all other living creatures you shall bring two into the ark, one male and one female, that you may keep them alive. Moreover, you are to provide yourself with all the food that is to be eaten."
Then the LORD said to Noah: "Go into the ark. Seven days from now I will bring rain down for 40 days and nights and I will wipe out from the surface of the earth every moving creature that I have made."
With his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, Noah went into the ark. Of the animals, two by two male and female entered the ark with Noah, just as the LORD had commanded. As soon as the seven days were over, the waters of the flood came.
For forty days and forty nights heavy rain poured down on the earth. All creatures on earth perished: only Noah and those with him in the ark were left.
God remembered Noah and all the animals with him. So God made a wind sweep over the earth and the waters began to subside. At the end of 150 days the waters had so diminished that the ark came to rest.
Noah opened the hatch in the ark, and he sent out a dove, to see if the waters had lessened. But the dove could find no place to alight and it returned. He waited 7 days and again sent the dove out... and this time it did not come back.
Then God said to Noah: "Go out of the ark. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you and let them abound on the earth, breeding and multiplying on it."
Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and he offered holocausts.
God blessed Noah and said: "Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth. Every creature that is alive shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plants.
God said, "See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants, never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood. This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come - I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the everlasting covenant that I have established."
God is Love, Jesus proves it!
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was with child through the holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, (Yahweh saves) because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,"
which means "God is with us."
You are Peter; upon this rock I will build my church & the gates of hell shall not prevail against it--I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus said: Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me & I in him. John 6.
Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them. John 20
Dios es amor. Christ, risen savior of humankind, is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. He is the Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He will come again in glory. "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except thru me. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and proclaimed to them, "You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. This is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
'It will come to pass in the last days,' God says,
'that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh.
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
your old men shall dream dreams.
Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids
I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days,
and they shall prophesy...
and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on
the name of the Lord.'
You Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through Him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
God raised Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father and poured it forth, as you both see and hear. Therefore let all Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified."
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?"
Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.
" He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and former earth had passed away. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away."
The one who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Then he said, "Write these words down, for they are trustworthy and true."
He said to me, "They are accomplished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the spring of life-giving water.

Esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas,

Vino un hombre llamado Juan. Dios lo envio' como testigo para dar testimonio de la luz, a fin de que por medio de El todos creyeran. Juan no era la luz, sino que vino para dar testimonio de la luz. Esa luz verdadera, la que alumbra a todo ser humano, venia a este mundo.
El que era la luz ya estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue creado por medio de El, pero el mundo no lo reconocio'. Vino a lo que era suyo, pero los suyos no lo recibieron. Mas a cuantos lo recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio el derecho de ser hijos de Dios. Estos no nacen de la sangre, ni por deseos naturales, ni por voluntad humana, sino que nacen de Dios.
Y el Verbo se hizo hombre y habito' entre nosotros. Y hemos contemplado su gloria, la gloria que corresponde al Hijo unigenito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
De su plenitud todos hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia, pues la ley fue dada por medio de Moises, mientras que la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por medio de Jesucristo. A Dios nadie lo ha visto nunca; el Hijo unigenito, que es Dios y que vive en unio'n intima con el Padre, nos lo ha dado a conocer.

A la verdad, no me averguenzo del evangelio, pues es poder de Dios para la salvacio'n de todos los que creen: de los judi'os primeramente, pero también de los gentiles. De hecho, en el evangelio se revela la justicia que proviene de Dios, la cual es por fe de principio a fin, tal como está escrito: «El justo vivirá por la fe.
Ciertamente, la ira de Dios viene revelándose desde el cielo contra toda impiedad e injusticia de los seres humanos, que con su maldad obstruyen la verdad. Me explico: lo que se puede conocer acerca de Dios es evidente para ellos, pues él mismo se lo ha revelado. Porque desde la creacio'n del mundo las cualidades invisibles de Dios, es decir, su eterno poder y su naturaleza divina, se perciben claramente a través de lo que él creo', de modo que nadie tiene excusa. A pesar de haber conocido a Dios, no lo glorificaron como a Dios ni le dieron gracias, sino que se extraviaron en sus inu'tiles razonamientos, y se les oscurecio' su insensato corazo'n. Aunque afirmaban ser sabios, se volvieron necios y cambiaron la gloria del Dios inmortal por imágenes que eran réplicas del hombre mortal, de las aves, de los cuadru'pedos y de los reptiles. Por tanto, Dios los entrego' a pasiones vergonzosas. En efecto, las mujeres cambiaron las relaciones naturales por las que van contra la naturaleza. Asi' mismo los hombres dejaron las relaciones naturales con la mujer y se encendieron en pasiones lujuriosas los unos con los otros. Hombres con hombres cometieron actos indecentes, y en si' mismos recibieron el castigo que mereci'a su perversio'n.
Además, como estimaron que no vali'a la pena tomar en cuenta el conocimiento de Dios, él a su vez los entrego' a la depravacio'n mental, para que hicieran lo que no debi'an hacer. Se han llenado de toda clase de maldad, perversidad, avaricia y depravacio'n. Están repletos de envidia, homicidios, disensiones, engano y malicia. Son chismosos, calumniadores, enemigos de Dios, insolentes, soberbios y arrogantes; se ingenian maldades; se rebelan contra sus padres; son insensatos, desleales, insensibles, despiadados. Saben bien que, segu'n el justo decreto de Dios, quienes practican tales cosas merecen la muerte; sin embargo, no so'lo siguen practicándolas sino que incluso aprueban a quienes las practican.
A su paso, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento. Y sus discÃpulos le preguntaron: —RabÃ, para que este hombre haya nacido ciego, ¿quién pecó, él o sus padres? —Ni él pecó, ni sus padres —respondió Jesús—, sino que esto sucedió para que la obra de Dios se hiciera evidente en su vida. Mientras esté yo en el mundo, luz soy del mundo. Dicho esto, escupió en el suelo, hizo barro con la saliva y se lo untó en los ojos al ciego, diciéndole: —Ve y lávate en el estanque de Siloé (que significa: Enviado). El ciego fue y se lavó, y al volver ya veÃa. Sus vecinos y los que lo habÃan visto pedir limosna decÃan: «¿No es éste el que se sienta a mendigar?» Unos aseguraban: «SÃ, es él.» Otros decÃan: «No es él, sino que se le parece.» Pero él insistÃa: «Soy yo.» —¿Cómo entonces se te han abierto los ojos? —le preguntaron. —Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo un poco de barro, me lo untó en los ojos y me dijo: "Ve y lávate en Siloé." Asà que fui, me lavé, y entonces pude ver. —¿Y dónde está ese hombre? —le preguntaron. —No lo sé —respondió. ... ... interrogaron de nuevo al ciego: —¿Y qué opinas tú de él? Fue a ti a quien te abrió los ojos. —Yo digo que es profeta —contestó. Pero los judÃos no creÃan que el hombre hubiera sido ciego y que ahora viera, y hasta llamaron a sus padres y les preguntaron: —¿Es éste su hijo, el que dicen ustedes que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora puede ver? —Sabemos que éste es nuestro hijo —contestaron los padres—, y sabemos también que nació ciego. Lo que no sabemos es cómo ahora puede ver, ni quién le abrió los ojos. Pregúntenselo a él.
Jesús resucita a Lázaro
HabÃa un hombre enfermo llamado Lázaro, que era de Betania, el pueblo de MarÃa y Marta, sus hermanas. MarÃa era la misma que ungió con perfume al Señor, y le secó los pies con sus cabellos. Las dos hermanas mandaron a decirle a Jesús: «Señor, tu amigo querido está enfermo.» Cuando Jesús oyó esto, dijo: «Esta enfermedad no terminará en muerte, sino que es para la gloria de Dios, para que por ella el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado.» Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro. A pesar de eso, cuando oyó que Lázaro estaba enfermo, se quedó dos dÃas más donde se encontraba. Después dijo a sus discÃpulos: —Volvamos a Judea. —Rabà —objetaron ellos—, hace muy poco los judÃos intentaron apedrearte, ¿y todavÃa quieres volver allá? —¿Acaso el dÃa no tiene doce horas? —respondió Jesús—. El que anda de dÃa no tropieza, porque tiene la luz de este mundo. Pero el que anda de noche sà tropieza, porque no tiene luz. Dicho esto, añadió: —Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero voy a despertarlo. —Señor —respondieron sus discÃpulos—, si duerme, es que va a recuperarse. Jesús les hablaba de la muerte de Lázaro, pero sus discÃpulos pensaron que se referÃa al sueño natural. Por eso les dijo claramente: —Lázaro ha muerto, y por causa de ustedes me alegro de no haber estado allÃ, para que crean. Pero vamos a verlo.
Jesús consuela a las hermanas de Lázaro
A su llegada, Jesús se encontró con que Lázaro llevaba ya cuatro dÃas en el sepulcro. Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a tres kilómetros de distancia, y muchos judÃos habÃan ido a casa de Marta y de MarÃa, a darles el pésame por la muerte de su hermano. Cuando Marta supo que Jesús llegaba, fue a su encuentro; pero MarÃa se quedó en la casa. —Señor —le dijo Marta a Jesús—, si hubieras estado aquÃ, mi hermano no habrÃa muerto. Pero yo sé que aun ahora Dios te dará todo lo que le pidas. —Tu hermano resucitará —le dijo Jesús. —Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el dÃa final —respondió Marta. Entonces Jesús le dijo: —Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en mà vivirá, aunque muera; y todo el que vive y cree en mà no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto? —SÃ, Señor; yo creo que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, el que habÃa de venir al mundo. Dicho esto, Marta regresó a la casa y, llamando a su hermana MarÃa, le dijo en privado: —El Maestro está aquà y te llama. Cuando MarÃa oyó esto, se levantó rápidamente y fue a su encuentro. Cuando MarÃa llegó adonde estaba Jesús y lo vio, se arrojó a sus pies y le dijo: —Señor, si hubieras estado aquÃ, mi hermano no habrÃa muerto. Al ver llorar a MarÃa y a los judÃos que la habÃan acompañado, Jesús se turbó y se conmovió profundamente. —¿Dónde lo han puesto? —preguntó. —Ven a verlo, Señor —le respondieron. Jesús lloró. —¡Miren cuánto lo querÃa! —dijeron los judÃos. Pero algunos de ellos comentaban: —Éste, que le abrió los ojos al ciego, ¿no podrÃa haber impedido que Lázaro muriera?
Conmovido una vez más, Jesús se acercó al sepulcro. Era una cueva cuya entrada estaba tapada con una piedra. —Quiten la piedra —ordenó Jesús. Marta, la hermana del difunto, objetó: —Señor, ya debe oler mal, pues lleva cuatro dÃas allÃ. —¿No te dije que si crees verás la gloria de Dios? —le contestó Jesús. Entonces quitaron la piedra. Jesús, alzando la vista, dijo: —Padre, te doy gracias porque me has escuchado. Ya sabÃa yo que siempre me escuchas, pero lo dije por la gente que está aquà presente, para que crean que tú me enviaste. Dicho esto, gritó con todas sus fuerzas: —¡Lázaro, sal fuera! El muerto salió, con vendas en las manos y en los pies, y el rostro cubierto con un sudario. —QuÃtenle las vendas y dejen que se vaya —les dijo Jesús.
Cuando Jesús regresó, la multitud se alegró de verlo, pues todos estaban esperándolo. En esto llegó un hombre llamado Jairo, que era un jefe de la sinagoga. Arrojándose a los pies de Jesús, le suplicaba que fuera a su casa, porque su única hija, de unos doce años, se estaba muriendo. Jesús se puso en camino y las multitudes lo apretujaban. HabÃa entre la gente una mujer que hacÃa doce años padecÃa de hemorragias, sin que nadie pudiera sanarla. Ella se le acercó por detrás y le tocó el borde del manto, y al instante cesó su hemorragia. —¿Quién me ha tocado? —preguntó Jesús. Como todos negaban haberlo tocado, Pedro le dijo: —Maestro, son multitudes las que te aprietan y te oprimen. —No, alguien me ha tocado —replicó Jesús—; yo sé que de mà ha salido poder. La mujer, al ver que no podÃa pasar inadvertida, se acercó temblando y se arrojó a sus pies. En presencia de toda la gente, contó por qué lo habÃa tocado y cómo habÃa sido sanada al instante. —Hija, tu fe te ha sanado —le dijo Jesús—. Vete en paz. TodavÃa estaba hablando Jesús, cuando alguien llegó de la casa de Jairo, jefe de la sinagoga, para decirle: —Tu hija ha muerto. No molestes más al Maestro. Al oÃr esto, Jesús le dijo a Jairo: —No tengas miedo; cree nada más, y ella será sanada. Cuando llegó a la casa de Jairo, no dejó que nadie entrara con él, excepto Pedro, Juan y Jacobo, y el padre y la madre de la niña. Todos estaban llorando, muy afligidos por ella. —Dejen de llorar —les dijo Jesús—. No está muerta sino dormida. Entonces ellos empezaron a burlarse de él porque sabÃan que estaba muerta. Pero él la tomó de la mano y le dijo: —¡Niña, levántate! Recobró la vida y al instante se levantó. Jesús mandó darle de comer. Los padres se quedaron atónitos, pero él les advirtió que no contaran a nadie lo que habÃa sucedido.
